9 - Water drains backwards in the Southern Hemisphere due to the Earth's rotation.

This one makes me wonder after my geography class last semester lol. They say that water going down a drain or toilet rotates counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere because of the coriolis force. My professor actually had a girl call home and ask her mother if the toilet flushed clockwise and counterclockwise and everytime it was counterclockwise. Then he had people go to the bathroom and flush the toilets and each result was counterclockwise. I tried it in the drain at home and the toilet lol and it was counterclockwise also. If I had taken the class before I went to Guyana in December I would have tried it there to see if it rotated clockwise lol.

Interesting cause guyana is on the Equator. So which direction will the water drain out? Maybe it has something to do with the vent pipe, cause a drain needs air to go down properly. Still interesting tho.

Sk!tes... I just realised that... I was thinking South America's in the southern hemisphere... my bad...

Well, on the equator the coriolis effect is weaker and the farther you move from the equator, the stronger it gets. So, the farther you get from the equator, the stronger the rotation should be. According to the theory, the water should go straight down on the equator... which I don't think actually happens... that would just be weird lol.

I came across why the water turns in the direction it does but... I closed the page ;x
